May is Jewish American Heritage Month and Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. We’d like to take this opportunity to honor and acknowledge how our Jewish heritage intersects with other heritages and identities.
We all have intersecting identities related to things like race, gender, religion, our role in our family, and more. And our lives are influenced by our heritage and history—both our own and our family’s. Heritage relates to cultural traditions and family practices passed down through generations.
Here are six articles to consider as we think about heritage:
- “What Do I do With All This Heritage?” by Maryam Chishti, co-executive director of The LUNAR Collective
- Threads of Identity: LGBTQ+ Jews of Color in the Fabric of Jewish Life from Keshet
- “My Superpower: On Being Black, Japanese, and Jewish” by Dee Sanae, founder of Mosaic Visions
- “Asian Jewish Americans have a double reason to celebrate their heritage in May” by Gemma Ware on The Conversation
- “Five Jewish AAPI Movers and Shakers” by Alex Graaff on ReformJudaism.org
- “I am Jewish. But I’m Also Latina.” by Arielle Egozi on Hey Alma
At JFS, we strive to serve all members of our community and honor the range of identities that each person carries. We affirm the dignity of all people and the rights that they deserve, regardless of race, gender identity, sexual identity, ability, religion, or any other aspects of what makes us who we are. Inspired by our history and values, JFS supports the needs of Jewish individuals and families, refugees and immigrants, and our broader community to achieve well-being, health, and stability.
