Fighting Isolation, One Connection at A Time

One in three older adults experiences loneliness, and the toll it takes is more than emotional. Social isolation can shorten lives, increase the risk of cognitive decline, and chip away at the joy and dignity every person deserves.

At JFS, we believe our elders should be celebrated for the lives they’ve led and the wisdom they carry. They’ve supported generations, and now it’s our turn to show up for them.

That’s why we’re thrilled to launch Elder Connections, a new program at JFS designed to reduce isolation by fostering one-on-one relationships between older Jewish adults and caring volunteers across King County. Rooted in the Jewish values of kavod (dignity) and kibbud zekaynim (honoring elders), this program creates powerful intergenerational connections and meaningful moments of companionship.

Our volunteers bring compassion and consistency to every interaction—whether it’s a walk in the park or helping with groceries; the smallest gestures often make the biggest impact.

Activities may include:

  • Friendly phone calls or home visits
  • Coffee dates and card games
  • Running errands
  • Light meal prep
  • Yardwork
  • Tech support
  • Meaningful conversation

“Every time we match a volunteer with an older adult, we’re not just offering support—we’re building community. These connections often become deeply meaningful for both people involved.” — Jennifer Levine, Elder Connections Coordinator at JFS
